Strike Hits 100 Southern Illinois Roofers Local 255
About 100 roofers in 18 counties walked off the job after rejecting a contract Sunday as the Local 255 Mt. Vernon union expired at midnight. Union officials said negotiators and contractors met with federal mediator Ray Hall on Saturday to avert a strike, but this was the second contract rejection. Six firms are affected, and no new negotiations are planned according to Bill Butler of the Southern Illinois Builders Association.

Suspect in Marion slaying linked to neighborhood visits
Investigators said a suspect 30 to 40 years old, stocky with neath black hair, may have visited the Marion neighborhood three or four times before the murder of Virginia Witte. Witte, 51, was found nude in her home with stab and slash wounds. A late model silver sedan was seen near the house. Police have drawn composite sketches, processed over 100 items at the FBI lab, and hold robbery as unlikely since valuables were undisturbed. The case is being compared with the unsolved Lucille Fliger death in Carbondale, with no confirmed link.

Judge rules Illinois cannot inspect Metropolis coal terminal
Saline County judge Arlie Boswell Jr. rules the Illinois Department of Mines and Minerals lacks authority to inspect the Cook Coal Transfer terminal on the Ohio River. The coal dock, a non union site 1,000 miles from its mined coal, employs 60 workers and is said to be routinely inspected by OSHA. The decision follows a January refusal to allow a state inspector entry and precedes a Massac County case charging eight miners with mob violence and property damage for a December protest that closed the dock for two weeks. A $2 million suit by dock operators against the UMW remains pending.

SIUC to cap enrollment after admitting about 3000 freshmen
Horton said SIUC plans a enrollment cap after admitting roughly 3000 new freshmen, about the same target as last year. He noted a prior underestimation led to 300 to 400 more students than expected while last fall SIUC had 21114 on campus. This year the target is about 22500 total and 21000 on campus as registrations for nonfreshmen hold steady. Budget limits and housing shortages have driven two-year enrollment limits.
