The Archer Daniels Midland Company and Eisner Foods introduce hydroponic lettuce in Central Illinois stores, harvesting 6 000 heads using waste heat from ADM's Decatur alcohol plant. The product, sold at 49 cents a head, shows strong customer demand and potential price advantages through reduced transportation. ADM plans to expand with more greens and tests the system for broader use.

Erosion Threat Forecast in Illinois Sees Worst in Years

Keith Bell of the Soil Conservation Service warns Illinois faces the worst erosion potential in a decade. With over 70 percent of cropland tilled and little crop residue after last year’s drought, bare seedbeds will crust after rains, increasing runoff and reducing water infiltration. Fully 6.9 million acres are sloped and need treatment. normal rains could double erosion rates, risking topsoil loss across hundreds of farms. Farmers can reduce erosion by fewer field passes, early planting for canopy, and avoiding fall tillage to boost infiltration and save fuel. Bell urges prudent timing and moisture conservation, even as some pressure to tilled fields persists.
