Utilities accused of big overcharge in coal strike era
A federal energy official said last winter’s 110 day coal strike may have caused utilities to overcharge consumers about 100 million dollars for emergency electricity purchases. William V. Lindsay of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission testified before a Senate panel that surcharges piled on as power moved between systems, often 10 percent per transfer, ending in fuel adjustment charges on bills. Refunds to electric power consumers are possible pending the study’s findings.
