Illinois considers 170 abandoned coal mines for reclamation with public input sought on worst environmental conditions and best potential public use. State officials will prioritize repairs once federal approval and funding from a coal tax are in place, listing counties and specific mines across Williamson, Jackson, Randolph, Franklin, Johnson and other counties.
Cutler fire chief Larry Bennett accuses the village board of ignoring residents by considering selling a police car obtained at no cost from a county grant. The board voted to study legality while residents had urged keeping the car and hiring a part-time officer. A petition with 204 signatures backed the residents, and the board cited cost concerns and past trouble with volunteer officers. Provart noted grant strings may have expired.
The Tower Square Merchants Association in Marion urges the U S Postal Service to keep the Marion post office at its current site if possible. If space is insufficient they support a nearby location and seek close proximity to the current building built in 1918.
