Floodwaters have receded in many Southern Illinois towns but recovery will take time. Officials and residents seek how to cover losses and rebuild. Massac County Emergency Services Director Larry Douglas says a permitting process for contractors aiding reconstruction is being prepared.
State Rep. Brandon Phelps and Sen. Gary Forby visited flooded Junction Metropolis and Olive Branch communities on Saturday to urge Gov. Pat Quinn to declare the areas a federal disaster and to help victims. The story notes further details online under disaster aid on page 3A.
Natasha Aldrich, a SIUC master's student and program coordinator, led the creation of the Sasuki Single Parent Program starting November 2008 after earning her bachelor's degree. She will graduate with her master's this week, highlighting the campus support network for single parents.
The two year anniversary of the 2009 super derecho coincides with record floods in Southern Illinois. Officials in Franklin Williamson and Jackson counties say residents are fairly to moderately prepared for the next weather disaster as drought and heavy rainfall follow the landmark storm. Voters are invited to share views online and on social media.
