SIU influence prompts Carbondale to seek state aids
Carbondale officials outline nine major points for the Illinois Municipal Problems Commission hearing. They urge counting SIU student population in motor fuel tax apportionment, annual city aid for university-related services, railroad tax rebates on Illinois Central main line, and continued main line tax protections from local tax. They seek shared county reassessment costs, revised highway priorities favoring the south, funding for water and sewer projects, state help for disadvantaged workers, protection of public employee collective rights with no strikes, and entry level openings for police jobs from outside the community. City Attorney George Fleerlage calls for more qualified investigators.
