Bloomington synagogue saved by Black Baptists revival
Deacon DeWitt Taylor leads Loving Missionary Baptist Church in converting the former Moses Montefiore Temple back toward sacred use. They aim to restore the 1889 Joliet limestone synagogue, preserve Jewish heritage, and seek national historic site status, with initial pledges of 12 000 toward a 650 000 dome replacement and renovation. Rabbi Gershon Blackmore notes Montefiore members may contribute too.
