Bowen Center understaffing probe cited in Harrisburg

Gubernatorial aide Gayle Franzen, ordered by Gov. James Thompson, conducted a three day investigation into Bowen Children’s Center and found staffing shortfalls that justify union claims of overtime strain. Union Local 779 had urged 65 new staff to relieve overwork while state investigators noted some exaggeration but acknowledged programming declines due to staff shortages. Franzen will file a report to Thompson, with results likely to hinge on whether the center is truly understaffed and where gaps lie.

Du Quoin Rejects Bond for New Middle School

Du Quoin voters rejected a 1.15 million dollar local bond plan to match a 1.37 million state grant for a new middle school for grades six to eight. The tally was 1,286 opposed to 737 in favor, with concerns about student density near a high school and letting younger children attend a near high school area. Proponents argued the bond would allow two waivers schools to close and bring Paradise Prairie kindergartners closer home.
