Tons Of Water Poured Into Marion Fire
In Marion downtown, three quarters of a million gallons of water were used to fight a Monday night blaze. City water plant operator Ralph Carter said 1 212 000 gallons were consumed that day, 758 000 more than normal, with the plant running at full capacity to supply the demand. The fire drained the filter plant lake a foot, and reduced the 1744 foot deep well by six feet. The lake’s supply line south of town carries about a million gallons daily, but Carter expects refilling after the consumption drops.

Court Rules Herrin Vote On Unit District Formation
The Fourth District Appellate Court at ML Vernon confirms an election on forming a Herrin unit school district. The decision upholds Williamson County Judge Reynolds's June ruling. If approved, Herrin Grade School District would become the unit, with outlying districts allowed voting only by residents in petitioned territory. The court found unit creation would boost efficiency and state aid, benefiting about 1,800 pupils while limiting outlying district voting impacts.
