Plagiarism: A haunting word for SIU leader

Controversies at SIU span Poshard and Wendler since 2004

A run of clashes highlights the era from 2004 to 2008. Poshard as SIU Board chair battled Chancellor Walter Wendler over benefits policy on religious grounds and fairness across statewide employees. Wendler publicly opposed the policy, while Poshard framed it as equal treatment. The 2005 search for SIU president drew fire for secrecy as candidates were interviewed without public finalists named. In 2006 Poshard did not renew Wendler’s term, reassigning him to architecture as a full professor due to communication issues. 2007 a shadow group alleged plagiarism in a doctoral dissertation tied to a SIU Edwardsville faculty member, prompting an investigation that found attribution mistakes but no deliberate plagiarism. corrections were allowed. 2008 Poshard placed Chancellor Fernando Trevisio on administrative leave for poor performance. Trevisio was fired, an arbitration panel later said the university need not pay the contract. Interim chancellor Sam Goldman was appointed.
