Illinois House defeats concealed carry bill in heated vote
The measure would have allowed 21 plus residents to obtain concealed carry permits after training. County sheriffs would issue permits costing 400 dollars while felons and some drug offenders would be barred. Opponents warned guns in urban areas endanger citizens. Supporters touted safety rules and no go zones including government buildings, schools, bars, and campuses. Governor Quinn vowed a veto, saying the bill would hamper law enforcement and fail to improve public safety. Downstate lawmakers framed the vote as crucial for central and southern voters facing tax hikes and budget woes.
