Carpenters Strike Halts Southern Illinois Projects
About 1 500 union carpenters in 13 counties began a strike after impasse in talks with the Southern Illinois Builders Association. Major area projects halted include hospital expansion, SIU campuses work, the Carbondale station, senior housing, and several housing and remodeling jobs in Carbondale, Murphysboro, Pinckneyville, Cobden, and Perry County. Union leaders cited wage and contract language disputes as the core issues, with no talks scheduled.

Coal talks resume between miners and operators
Morris Feibusch, vice president of the Southern Ilinoisan Bituminous Coal Operators Association, confirmed early this afternoon that the BCOA and the United Mine Workers will resume contract negotiations Thursday. The move follows a 38 day national coal strike after UMW President Sam Church announced the resumption on Sunday. Previously, BCOA leaders had only said talks were possible. The UMW rank and file rejected the only tentative agreement on March 31, and negotiations broke down again on April 17.

Marion post office seeks new site near Tower Square
The U S Postal Service eyes relocation options for Marion’s post office built in 1918 two blocks east of Tower Square Plaza. Postmaster Albert Vanhorn says expansion needs and more parking drive the move, while City officials fear loss could hurt downtown business. A feasibility study and site review by a Mission Kansas division rep are planned, with construction unlikely to start before three to four years.
