Deck collapse injures several in Carbondale
A second story deck fell from a home at 2237 Country Club Road in Carbondale. At least 20 people were on the deck when it gave way, injuring Jason Dill and Bob Heim along with Whitney Miller and Craig Frank. Dill, 25, sustained a broken heel and other injuries. most injuries were not life threatening. The incident occurred Friday night with responders and an insurance adjuster later on scene.

Dr. Rob Jensen of Carbondale among 22 cardiovascular disease survivors who joined the Shawnee American Heart Walk at Campus Lake. The SIUC psychobiology professor praised local hospital care and fundraising gains, noting early efforts in 1993 and continued yearly increases to support AHA research and education. Virgie Mabry of West Frankfort, another survivor, described bypass surgery last June after years of breathlessness and high blood pressure.

Herrin Council OKs Street Closings for Hospital Expansion
The Herrin City Council unanimously approved closing parts of Lyerla Drive and South 14th Street to support a 16 million dollar Herrin Hospital expansion. Mayor Vic Ritter indicated earlier concerns were resolved and called the hospital’s growth essential as beds fill. A 2 cent per gallon gasoline tax was adopted 5-1, effective June 1 through April 30, 2004.
