The Day Without Immigrants boycott drew widespread disruption as restaurants, factories, and construction sites paused. Across the country workers stayed home, shipments slowed, and schools reported absences while protesters argued for reform. Melanie Lugo and family joined roughly 75,000 in Denver, voicing mutual dependence on immigrant labor.
Sheila Simon, a Carbondale City Councilwoman and SIUC law professor, officially announced her 2007 bid for mayor. More than 150 supporters gathered at City Hall as she pledged fiscal responsibility and strengthened education while inviting broad community involvement.
West City trustees adopt a 25-ton weight limit ordinance for trucks on a 0.2 mile stretch of North Central Street near Wal-Mart, barring semitrailers from the route to a Benton boat factory and a nearby ethanol plant. The 3-2 vote drew dissent from Sherry Mix and Dale Watkins, with Mayor Lee Roy Mumbower voicing support to protect roads and the shopping district.
