Strikers vote to drop Farm Bureau in Illinois

Illinois Agricultural Movement members voted to end their Farm Bureau memberships. Roger Menees of Anna says the action stems from bureau leadership ineptitude and failure to serve members, while Farm Bureau leaders defend programs to aid income and farm life. The AAM claims 34 strike offices statewide, with a Southern Illinois HQ in a caboose donated by lobbyist Clyde Choate.

Farm groups clash over movement to save family farms

Menees advocates a farmer led movement to protect the family farm and raise farm prices through a grower producer board under USDA. He contrasts it with the Farm Bureau which he says does not represent farmers’ interests though some members remain wary of unionization. Fosse and Klynstra defend continuity while noting potential future shifts. The discussion touches Emergency Farm Act of 1978 and a 10 percent acreage diversion plan. Bureau objections center on potential price impacts and world markets.
