The Illinois Department of Insurance under Fred A. Mauck warned Sunday it may liquidate 11 insurers, all subsidiaries of out-of-state firms, set up in Illinois to dodge a two percent tax on premiums. Named companies include General Casualty, INA, National Surety, International, Royal Globe, Reliance, St. Paul, Aetna, Travelers Indemnity, and Liberty Mortgage Insurance Corp.

Stateville Penitentiary authorities investigate a Sunday afternoon disturbance in the recreation yard involving about 50 inmates. Guards fired warning shots from towers to break up the melee. Fourteen inmates were injured, two seriously, with two hospitalized including a puncture wound to the lower back.
