American medic escapes Arafat compound after night among tanks
Adam Shapiro, a 30 year old American volunteer medic, spent Friday to Saturday inside Yasser Arafat s Ramallah offices with Israeli forces surrounding the compound. He called his family from New York to say he was out and two wounded Palestinians inside the building needed oxygen. Shapiro s fiancée Huweida Arraf said a small group of foreigners entered later to deliver aid and tend to the wounded before Shapiro exited with them. Caoimhe Butterly from Dublin stayed behind. Arraf said Shapiro reported sharing a meal with Arafat during the crisis.
