Mines Idle for 60th Anniversary Eight-Hour Day

All area mines will be idle Tuesday marking the 60th anniversary of the eight-hour contract signed April 1 1898. Before the pact workers in central fields logged ten hours daily. At the time Williamson County had five mines including Old Burr near Carterville and Fredonia Brush nearby.

Illinois Weekend Toll Tops Ten Dead On Highways

At least ten people died on Illinois roads during the first sunny spring weekend. A crash near St. Charles killed four riders when their car spun into a tree on State Route 31. In Joliet area, a mother and her 19 year old daughter in law perished in a two car crash and a burning vehicle. Three others were injured.

Stanford hikers rescued from Sierra by helicopter

Four Stanford University hikers stranded for days in the High Sierra were rescued by an Army helicopter and taken to Lewis Memorial Hospital in good condition. The group of two women and two men had been on a six day 60 mile hike and were located by Bob Symonds before the rescue led by Chief Ranger Oscar Sedergren.
