Caled Hale reports farmers in Southern Illinois anticipate a profitable 2004 season as prices for fall crops hold and demand for machinery rises. Despite wet ground from weekend rain, growers expect most corn and soybeans to be planted by late April. Farm leaders credit higher crop prices and a weak dollar for a positive outlook, while dealers note strong demand for planters and machinery, notably 16 row models priced around $75,000.

Benton High Faces June Classes Without Air Conditioning
Benton students may endure class time through June 24 amid a five week strike and costly peak electricity rates. Superintendent Kelly Stewart says air conditioning can run only 10 p.m. to 10 a.m. during June 7 to August 24 without raising costs. The district faces a budget deficit and could incur up to 20000 more for air conditioning during this period. Officials seek a waiver but caution results may be limited.
