No Place Like Home for Elderly Couple in Frugal Winter Housing
Lydia Mallory 74 and Horace 98 endure a cold five room frame house on the outskirts of Lesser without running water or indoor plumbing. Coal fuels the Warm Morning stove serving as heat and hot water as they fetch water from a rear pump for dishes and washing. They have considered moving to a one level home but choose to stay after 53 years in the same bedroom and bed. The front room holds a lifetime of belongings and mementos illuminated by sparse light and a meter of patience.
