Van Winkle Named SIU Carbondale Basketball Coach
Allen Van Winkle becomes the eighth Saluki basketball coach at SIU Carbondale after Athletic Director Gale Sayers announced the hire at a morning press conference. Sayers cited a gut feeling and noted a likely three year deal with a $34,000 to $37,000 salary. Van Winkle, 33, comes from Jackson Community College where his teams went 88 14 over three seasons and were nationally ranked. He will retain Rob Spivery and must build his staff after the new fiscal year. He vows aggressive recruiting and aims to lift SIU from its 7 20 last season and MVC struggles.

New coach deserves fair chance at SIU C basketball
Sympathy may be in order for Allen Van Winkle as he takes over a program mired in mismanagement at SIU C. The coach faces on court foes and a troubled administration while trying to recruit his own staff and navigate a bungled hiring process. Fans and writers should judge him by results, not past missteps, and offer support as he builds the Salukis back.
