Gasoline spill after Marion train collision blocks several businesses

A gasoline tanker struck by an eastbound train on West College Street in Marion spilled thousands of gallons into a small creek near Crab Orchard Lake. At least three businesses—Martin Oil Co service station, Stewart's Lounge, and E. Blankenship & Co.—were closed for about six hours as emergency crews contained the spill and pumped gasoline from the creek. The 48 year old driver, Robert R. Snider of Cape Girardeau, escaped injury. The train engineer said travel was 20 to 25 mph when the crash occurred and the spill area remained closed until early Saturday.
