Gorton Hero of Iraq Service Highlighted by SIUC Memory
Former SIUC student Doy Gorton received three Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals for combat actions in Iraq. He led his platoon under fire at Umm Qasr and defended a convoy, later aiding in the rescue of Pvt. Jessica Lynch. His professors credit his intellectual curiosity and restraint under stress.
