Anna veterans home privatization bill praised by Phelps and Maupin
Illinois House backed a bill to end private vendors at Anna Veterans Home, 98-2, amid long union pressure led by AFSCME officials and lawmakers Mike Bost and Brandon Phelps. The measure targets privatization at Anna while noting the state runs four veterans homes. The sponsors expect Senate approval and governor action. Maupin cites profit motive as harming veteran care and credits union solidarity.

Murphysboro 160th anniversary marked by historic county seat move
In 1843 Jackson County moved its seat from Brownsville after a courthouse fire. A 20 acre gift near Brownsville formed a new town three miles east, later named Murphysboro for commissioner William C. Murphy. The site offered springs and woods, while Brownsville faced flooding and disease risks.
