Murphysboro officials unsure of Thursday brush fire origin
Murphysboro officials cannot determine what caused a Thursday brush fire that burned about 20 acres of floodplain brush and trees near the city’s trash site on Shoemaker Road. Firefighters say wind pushed flames northeast across a field and briefly toward homes before control. The Street Department chief blamed for the fire said he had no idea how it started, noting two workers were present at noon and that debris burning has occurred there before. The EPA said a six week permit to burn storm debris had expired, and no one is allowed to burn trash at the site. Civil Defense Coordinator said the cause is unknown and may have been spontaneous combustion.
