Van Winkle confident bid to coach SIU basketball
Allen Van Winkle, head coach at Jackson College, traveled to Carbondale for an interview to become SIU Carbondale's next basketball coach. He joined Joe Ramsey and Jack Morgenthaler among three finalists, with Athletic Director Gale Sayers to announce a decision Monday. Van Winkle recalled NCAA sanctions at Southwestern Louisiana in the 1970s and defended his past role, stressing compliant, aggressive recruiting and a fast paced, entertaining style. He pointed to Jackson College success, a 88-14 record, and named potential SIU players Kevin Willis, Cleveland Ribbins, and James Copeland as immediate assets.
