Illinois ranked No 4 in nation for tornado frequency
The Weather Channel places Illinois fourth on a list of top tornado states compiled by Greg Forbes. Longtime residents recall the 1925 Tri State Tornado, which killed 695 people along a path from Ellington Missouri to Petersburg Indiana. Recent deadly events include an EF4 in Harrisburg on February 29 and a Jefferson County tornado that killed a 60 year old woman. National Weather Service forecaster Rick Shanklin notes the last decade has been very active with 79 tornadoes in 2011 for the four state region and 25 already this year.
