Levee Holds as Meramec River Floods Valley Park Area
Floodwaters near record levels push through Missouri towns along the Meramec. Valley Park residents credit a $49 million Army Corps levee completed in 2005 for preventing overtopping. Upstream Eureka crested at 40 feet, below its 42.9-foot record, while Meramec Lake area reported 37.8 feet at midday. Local business owner Tracy Ziegler praised the levee as her bar remained dry. Across the Midwest, rivers rose with about a foot of rain in 36 hours, prompting evacuations in Cape Girardeau County and widespread flooding in 70 Missouri counties.
