Democrats weigh smaller cuts to aid for the poor in Reagan budget
House Democrats on the Budget Committee say they will soften Reagan era reductions in child nutrition student loans Medicaid job training and other social programs for the needy while preserving the overall cut target near 48.6 billion. They plan to shift some savings to defense and other areas and argue cuts should not overly burden the poor even as they acknowledge political risk and fluid support for the president.

Reagan to sharpen attack on fraud in federal programs
President Reagan plans a multi front drive against waste and fraud in federal programs. Brady emphasized the effort is part of his economic program, which also includes large budget cuts, a 30 percent tax cut, regulatory pruning, and money supply stabilization.
