Chinese Reds Block Removal Of Foreigners
Washington reports the Chinese Communists blocked a mass evacuation of foreigners from Shanghai by denying two landing craft access to the port. Nearly 2,000 foreigners including 30 Americans were slated to depart aboard World War II era LSTs, with the General Gordon and the American President Lines vessels ordered to remain at sea and Hong Kong to host the liner. The move follows broader U.S. pressure after China seized American consular property at Peiping.
