A federal judge ruled Westfield High School violated First Amendment rights by suspending students who handed out candy canes bearing religious messages without prior permission. Six of seven students received suspensions that were not served.
Prosecutors charged self proclaimed prophet Brian Mitchell and his wife Wanda Barzee with aggravated kidnapping and sexual assault in Elizabeth Smart’s nine month disappearance. They also face burglary and attempted aggravated kidnapping charges with potential life sentences if convicted.
