Mount Vernon voters weigh April school bond referendum
Mount Vernon Township High School district voters will decide on an April 5 bond issue to fund a new 300000 square foot high school at a yet to be set site. The $19.8 million local share would join $42.2 million in state capital funding to reach $62 million total. If approved the bond would add about $8.20 per $100000 of assessed property and hinges on state funds within five years. The aging campus of 11 buildings, some dating back to 1905, houses about 1350 students and has cramped classrooms and P E in a stored warehouse. The district studied renovations but concluded new construction offers better value. The Mount Vernon City Council backed the referendum.
