Pollination tips for home fruit tree plantings
University of Illinois extension expert Chris Doll warns that pollination matters for many fruit trees. Most peach nectarine and sour cherry are self fertile, while apples pears and plums often need a different variety for good yields. Bees are key pollinators and in urban areas nearby apple varieties may suffice without a second variety. When unsure, plant two or more varieties for reliable fruit set.
