Educational council honors four area leaders in education
Four Southern Illinois figures were awarded the Educational Council of 100 Inc. Award of Merit at the annual dinner. J. Murray Lee and Charles Hindersman of Carbondale, Peyton Kunce of Murphysboro, and James S. Spencer of Fairfield were recognized for longtime contributions to education. Lee, SIUC veteran educator and author, helped establish the university’s doctoral program in elementary education and previously led the SIUC elementary education department. Hindersman, former SIU-C business dean, chaired a high school board and supported Girl Scouts. Kunce, a former judge, helped found camps for the mentally retarded and served on state and federal commissions. Spencer, chancellor of Illinois Eastern Community College District 528, oversees a vast multi-county district.

SIU C debaters place second in Florida meet
SIU C debaters finish runner up to Wheaton College at the University of Florida Invitational Debate Tournament in Gainesville. Scott Maurer and Carroll Sweeney led a strong showing against top teams including UCLA, Florida, Wingate, and Wheaton, with Maurer placing second in individual speaking. The team, ranked 15th nationally, advances toward the national tournament in Reno with coach John Wittig and David Buckley guiding and a roster featuring Goffinet, Hamilton, and Remick.
