Man who admitted killing mother denied change of plea
Michael D. Woolard, an inmate at Menard Correctional Center, had his request to vacate his guilty plea denied by Williamson County Circuit Court Judge Ron Eckiss. Woolard, 46, formerly of Marion, pleaded guilty to first degree murder last July and is serving a 30 year sentence. He admitted suffocating his 67 year old mother Wanda L. Woolard on April 26, 2002 and setting the home on fire to erase evidence. Prosecutor Sean de Mello said there was no legal reason to set aside the plea and noted the judge’s strict standards for guilty pleas. Woolard initially claimed he left for a job interview before the fire.
