A federal court jury began deliberations in the racketeering trial of Scott Fawell, longtime aide to former Gov. George Ryan. Prosecutors likened the scheme to a greed driven theft of Illinois taxpayers, while Fawell faced eight counts linked to using state time and funds for Ryan campaigns and related wrongdoing.
U S Representative Phil Crane and his wife Arlene spent January 15 to 19, 2003, in Antigua and Barbados on an about $8000 privately funded trip. The group funding the travel largely consisted of U S business interests and the purpose centered on Caribbean economic conditions and trade.
In Peoria, Charlotte Gates, 29, fatally shot her estranged husband Christopher Winder after he allegedly broke into her home and beat her. Despite authorities noting no failure in the victim notification system, Gates had not signed up for alerts. Winder’s release was scheduled for March 6, but Gates was not notified as he was being released for a prior conviction against another woman. The notice arrived after a delay, sent to an old address and forwarded. No charges had been filed against Gates as of Tuesday.
