More than 1,500 Tiger supporters journeyed from Herrin to Peoria and back for the state tournament triumph. A mile long caravan, aided by Benton and other towns, led the bus through Marion with horns blaring and boosters decorating the route. Mayor Ritter praised the players as he welcomed them home.

Hunter missing in Valier creek search resumes efforts
Franklin County sheriff reports Shane Wheatley missing after 2 a.m. hunting trip near Valier. More than 150 volunteers, four-wheelers and horses searched the rain swollen Andy's Creek from Walier to Illinois 14 with divers to return at 8 a.m. today. Wheatley is a 36 year old father and Army veteran.

Marion civic center breaks ground after five years
The Marion Cultural and Civic Center, destroyed by arson on March 10, 1997, began construction in a $7 million project amid a cold breeze. Mayor Bob Butler and Civic Center Board chair Yolande Peterson stressed community resilience and the center’s role in meetings and local theater. John Pape, now a New York producer, praised rebuilding to sustain Marion’s music and drama programs.
