School superintendents gains spark pension policy debate
The Tribune reports several Illinois districts gave superintendents 20 percent raises in the 1970s despite budget deficits and declining test scores. Dalton’s William Gerry Morgan got a 20 percent raise amid a $5.6 million shortfall. Kane County’s Marvin Edwards drew two 20 percent boosts to a final $289,041. About 40 districts posted deficits and lower scores while overseeing these raises. Michael Johnson of the Illinois Association of School Boards says raises reflect staff shortages. Gidwitz calls for an end to the practice.
