Wall Street slides as credit market fears deepen
Wall Street stocks tumbled as the ailing credit market and rising foreclosures stoked fears of a sagging economy. The Dow fell 214.60 to 12,040.39 as Thornburg Mortgage and Carlyle Group bond funds faced margin calls, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq also declined. Bond yields fell, gold slid, oil hit a record high, and major retailers showed mixed signals amid worries about consumer spending and a looming jobs report.
