Miners strike may strip food aid under Taft Hartley
Monroe James of Johnston City will likely lose his food stamps if he does not return to work as the Taft Hartley Act is invoked by President Carter. A federal court injunction is expected to require striking UMW members to resume work for an 80 day cooling off period, making the three month strike illegal and jeopardizing aid to Illinois UMW families. Local public aid officials race to align timetables, while miners voice skepticism and blame the administration.

Rend Lake College rehires all full time faculty after closed sessions
After over five hours in closed sessions the Rend Lake College Board voted to re-employ all full time faculty for the coming year. The panel did not grant tenure to Keith Drayton, a music instructor, but offered him a sixth one year contract and will reconsider tenure after year six. Sandra Van Celve received tenure. The board cited policy limits and did not give specific reasons for Drayton’s outcome. The move followed tension between faculty and administration and concerns over President Martin’s looming departure in June.
