The Supreme Court upheld life in prison or 50 years to life for repeat offenders under California three strikes law. Gary Ewing, caught with golf clubs, and Leandro Andrade, who shoplifted videotapes, were each sentenced under the law. Justices split 5 to 4, with dissents noting penalties far exceed similar crimes elsewhere.
