Murphysboro man faces new charges in beating case
Herbert Carrel, 24, previously acquitted of aggravated battery and attempted murder in the Aug. 22 23 beating of Shannon Mitchell, now faces two counts of obstruction of justice for allegedly furnishing false information to a Jackson County investigator on Oct. 9 and 13. He appeared in court on Thursday, released on 3000 bond, with a March 31 preliminary hearing set. The case seeks outside judges to avoid prejudice. Shannon, now blind paralyzed and brain damaged, was the victim in the earlier charges. Sherry Lynne Mitchell, 20, was found guilty of attempted murder and aggravated battery in December and sentenced to 14 years.

Jackson loses bid to lower tax multiplier
Illinois Department of Revenue officials told Massey at a Springfield hearing they were not persuaded to adjust the county’s tentative property tax multiplier of 1.8465. Massey argued the multiplier overstates sales gains by using expensive home sales to set a statewide figure, while local figures show declines. The 1.8465 rate up from 1.6902 for 1980 taxes payable in 1981 remains in effect.

Baptists reject city's offer for Walnut Street site
The Walnut Street Baptist Church in Carbondale unanimously rejected the city’s purchase offer during a special meeting with about 250 members. Rev. Arthur Farmer refused to disclose the amount, saying the offer was not enough and attorneys are handling it. The church opposes the downtown hotel convention center project and had previously urged HUD to block it. HUD returned the land grant issue to the city for response as a Monday deadline nears for project-area property owners to settle.
