Reagan defense buildup seeks extra funding if inflation remains high
The Reagan administration backs a 32.6 billion defense rise through 1982 with plans for supplemental requests if inflation worsens. Weinberger told the Senate Armed Services Committee the program must stay intact, anticipating inflation easing to 7.2 percent in 1982 and 4 percent by 1986. He outlined ship, bomber, and missile ambitions, plus a 5.3 percent pay raise for personnel in July and a 9.1 percent rise in 1982, arguing the vast expansion is essential to counter the Soviet threat. The plan foresees 1.289 trillion in defense spending 1982–1986 and a peacetime budget near 222.2 billion in 1982.
