Carbondale owes railroad legacy to unpopular founder

In Carbondale, founder Brush defied rivals to win an Illinois Central line site here. He bought 360 acres around tracks, locating a future depot between Marion and Murphysboro with Makanda and De Soto as planned stations. The 1850s arrival of a teachers college and later coal convoys cemented the town’s rail backbone and seven tracks. Brush died in 1890, but his influence enabled rapid rail access to Chicago, New Orleans and St Louis from the depot.
