Marion federal prison to shift to medium security
The U S Penitentiary at Marion will realign from high to medium security after serving as a high security facility since 1963. The move, due to bed space needs, keeps Marion Camp as a minimum security unit. The site, long called the first supermax, saw prior expansions in 2005 with a $22 million project doubling maximum capacity. A separate fire in a vacant trailer in Carbondale is being investigated as arson, marking a second such incident this month.
