County asks Micheletto to quit RLCD board

Franklin County Board voted unanimously to seek the resignation of Bend Lake Conservancy District board President Pete Micheletto. Micheletto, a Mulkeytown resident, has served on the RLCD board for over 20 years and was reappointed in 2002 for a five year term ending January 2007. The district has seen firings of two general managers and federal and IRS inquiries with a federal grand jury convening next week.

UMW Rallys in Benton Against Miner Benefit Cuts

United Mine Workers President Cecil Roberts rallied about 250 members at the Benton Civic Center vowing to block Horizon Natural Resources bankruptcy plans that would strip health benefits for over 2,500 miners and retirees. He said the plan breaches the UMWA contract and the Coal Act and noted Lexington actions to oppose the cuts. Horizon operates 42 mines in multiple states and seeks to shed obligations while keeping properties.

Large cannabis bust nets 190 plants in trunk

Johnston City police found 190 marijuana plants in a parked car trunk after stopping a vehicle near Project Echo. Officers Candace McCurdy and Tony Kendrick detained Brandy Dann, 17, and three male juveniles as the alleged suspects in a major intoxicated-driving case and drug seizure.

Salyers Sentenced 90 Years For Child Sex Assault Case

Darrell Willard Salyers was given 90 years in prison by Judge Phillip Palmer for predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, aggravated kidnapping, and aggravated battery of a child involving a 12 year old Herrin girl. He must serve 85 percent, about 76 years, with parole eligibility at 102. The victim Kayce Cheatham and her family voiced relief and resilience after the verdict.

Army recalls about 5600 ex soldiers for active duty

The Army will involuntarily recall about 5,600 individuals who recently left service but remain in reserve. The activations will begin in July and run through December, marking the first sizable Individual Ready Reserve mobilization since 1991.
