A 50-year-old flagpole at Greenway Park in Dallas received repairs from Jerry Roberts on Tuesday. The $4-foot pole, once among the city's tallest, was refurbished ahead of the Independence Day parade Saturday.
Washington AP reports that the Army shifted recruiting stations from Black neighborhoods to White areas in what a former Defense Manpower Commission staffer calls a tactic limiting Black enlistments. Edward Scarborough testified to a House Armed Services subcommittee as it investigates alleged racial quotas in Marine Corps enlistments. The Pentagon denies discriminatory recruitment practices.
Tornadoes and severe winds struck central Illinois with at least a dozen funnel clouds sighted statewide. Three homes were flattened near Colfax and Lexington while several others were damaged. Two horses died and crops were uprooted as power lines and debris disrupted rural roads. No serious injuries reported.
