Carbondale Cyclist Qualifies For Nationals Events
Carbondale cyclists led by James Hertz earned spots in the United States Cycling Federation national championships at Illinois state events near Rockford and Plainfield. Hertz won a 105 mile road race to qualify for the senior road race in Louisville on August 15 after placing seventh in the time trials near Plainfield. Southern Illinois University Carbondale student Margaret Steinway finished second in the senior women's road race to qualify for the August 4 nationals, and won the time trials but missed the time standard for the event. Danny Casebeer finished eighth in the junior road race but qualified for the junior time trials on August 7 in Louisville. Stanhouse of Du Quoin had eight strong innings in a Tuesday night start in a separate game.

Fire at Custer County Fairgrounds Kills 16 Horses
A barn at the Custer County Fairgrounds in Broken Bow Nebraska burned early Tuesday, killing fifteen quarter horses and one pony. The animals were worth an estimated $50,000. Authorities investigated the cause of the blaze.
