The Summer Friendship Program, an international themed playground, runs July 10 to 28 at the Barnes and Russell streets corner in Northeast Carbondale. Activities from 9 to 11 30 a.m. include arts, crafts, music, games, dramatics, storytelling and refreshments for ages 5 to 12, staffed by SIU international students and local groups. Turco Manufacturing Co. donated gym set, two merry go rounds, two slides and two picnic tables. installation starts Saturday at 10 a.m. on a double vacant lot lent by Mr. and Mrs. George Thornton, with local youths assisting.

An Arkansas man, Jesse R. Lamb 21 of Marion, died after his car ran off Route 51 near Ullin and struck a tree in Union County. Police said the 6:15 a.m. accident sent him to Union County Hospital in Anna where he later died.
