Senate Cuts Duty Free Allowance For Tourists

The Senate approved a bill by 61 to 31 to reduce the duty-free allowance from 100 wholesale dollars to 100 retail dollars for items travelers bring home. The change translates roughly to a 67 dollar reduction in value and falls short of President Johnson's preferred 50 dollar retail limit. Existing law expired at midnight, risking a return to a 500 wholesale exemption. Also noted is a brief police speeding fine in Pinckneyville for Carol L. Stone.
